Cable 10 - Community Programming

The federal regulator of TV, radio, and cable, encourages all cable systems with 2000 or more subscribers to operate a community programming facility.

CRTV, being a subscriber-owned cable system, takes this philosophy seriously, and indeed goes a step further. (CRTV, by the way, has over 13,000 subscribers).

The local programming department is one of several functions of CRTV that serve our community. It allows local people access to the medium, so that they can be not merely passive consumers of television, but rather active participants in the making of TV shows. It is truly, neighbour talking to neighbour, over the electronic back fence, so to speak (people like to see people and places that they recognize as being local!). Most of the work is done by non-paid volunteers from the community.

In addition to this grass roots function, the local programming aspect of CRTV has become an important source of information about our community. Local programs have covered events and controversies for the benefit of people unable to participate in person.

Programs seen on any specific day on the community channel might include discussions, arts and sports related shows, religious material, women's issues, programs for teens, events coverage, programs of interest to minorities, just about anything.

CRTV listings can be found in local newspapers and on the message service on Cable 10. Live video feeds from various locations are often featured.
